God damn do I ever want to buy a mini, but I keep hearing horror stories about maintaining them. Even that wouldnt normally scare me, but apparently they are a nightmare to work on as well.

Honestly? So far I've had exactly zero issues. I've put close to 5,000 miles on it since I bought it, including lots of hard driving in multiple environments as well as one autocross.

Ya I mean could just be a case of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch, I've got to imagine they're objectively a pain to work on though because of the super tight packaging.

My 08 Clubman has 111,600 miles and the worst I've had to deal with is a leaky head gasket (bought with 48k and all maintenance before then was done by dealerships).

Obligatory, as I'm sure you are aware.

They can and will go wrong. But you'll love it so much, you won't care.
Full disclosure: Our R53's been in the family for nearly 10 years. New suspension, new wheels, alternator, clutch, flywheel, window motors have all been stuff replaced as part of general maintenance.

I also own a MINI, and there very much is a case of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch as you say. I've owned a 2003 justa for 4 years (~33k miles) and it has had a fair share of problems, almost all of which could have been avoided by shopping smarter.
And I do all my own work on mine, sometimes its a little cramped, some things are a little silly, but its honestly not all that bad. I think the nicest thing is, when you are doing something major, you can literally reach both sides of the car while laying on the ground!
And theres a ton of aftermarket support with both guides and parts. Once I finish my masters degree, Ill probably be on the lookout for a nice 05-06 cooper s, which are the best ones to own.

Only if you need to do something at the back of the engine, lol.
